The executive information system (EIS) is a system that provides information to upper-level managers on the overall performance of the firm. The term executive support system (ESS) has also been used. The executive‘s job can be described in terms of various roles like Informational Roles, Decisional Roles, and Interpersonal Roles. Six new information system (IS) leadership roles that are required to execute IS’s future agenda are chief architect, change leader, product developer, technology provocateur, coach, and chief operating strategist.

Regression analysis confirms the decreasing change leader role as the years in current position increase. Future IS leadership research may gain from global comparisons as indicated in the section on survey comparisons. Practicing IS/IT leaders will gain from this research by balancing leadership roles according to individual characteristics, organizational characteristics, and stages of growth.
